Her rendition of the poem was powerful. It added emphasis to the poem in places we would not pick up by simply reading it.

One must stand up for their beliefs. one has not lived their life unless they achieve something
for humanity.

Both poems dealt with the individual and how she/he feels about how they see themselves. In "Our Deepest Fear" - it deals with a person who is afraid to be successful - or appear to be successful. While in "POW" Alicia deals with not being able to express herself or being unable to share her true expressions.

Both are very deep - leaves a lot of food for thought.

Keyes is describing a prison of her own making. A prison in which she is her own jailer, the creator of the bars which cage her, the sole possessor of the keys, who is crying out to be released by finding her voice.

Alicia Keys seems to be saying that she is haunted by the thoughts she failed to put into words.

The poem POW in my opinion refers to not being silent to the world and we have the power to change. Only we can determine what we can do or not do.

Alicia Keys is great! She is so passionate about her work and I think that her poem really speaks true for many people who are afraid to speak their mind in fear of so many things. Prisoner of Words is an inspiration for all people to take advantage of their rights that our forefathers fought for- Freedom of Speech!

What are these 2 authors afraid of?
(Factual)
How do the authors fears make them feel? (Interpretive)

Unknown said...

Why are most people insecure?

If you overcome your fears and expressyourself honestly, this will empower others.

Ms. Keys uses interesting word-play, using the familiar "P.O.W." to mean prisoner of words. She continues with this analogy of imprisonment.

What is our deepest fear? And why?

The moral from both poems: Be true to yourself by confronting the status quo and the possibilities of judgment from others.

every person has within them a maximum security prision. Yet, within each of them resides the keys of liberation. We choose to stay hemmed up if we find ourselves perpetually incarcerated in thought or word. It is our chose!

In both poems there is an underlying theme of self doubt. The limitations we face are often self imposed due to fear of emmbarrasment, fear of failure, and at the same time fear of success. We must be cautious not to let these fears become self fulfilling prophecies. When we take the time to realize our own ability to rise above these limitations, we realize the power our successes can have not only on ourselves, but on others as well.

When reading this poem it reminds me of students who do not take advantage of the educational system. We sometimes blame the system, the educators and our environment for being a POW's. But we allow ourselves to be victims by not grasping the educational system and stand up for ourselves. I will keep this poem and share with our students in Rowan.

It better to take a chance than to be trapped by the fear of failing.

The two poems talk about speaking your mind. Instead of holding everything back. Letting go their poetic juices. Alicia keys is trying to tell people not to hold nothing in just let everything out because if u dont u will feel like your locked up behind bars.

the two poems are very similar and both speak about standing out or making the difference. OUR DEEPEST FEAR sends a message that most times we are afraid because we may be intimidated, not because we are not able to do something. when we are alone things seem to be easier than when they are in the light. when we allow ourselves to stand out we set the example for others to do so. P.O.W. is an inspiring poem that tells you to speak your mind. Do not become prisoner to your own thoughts. when you keep emotions bottled inside, it becomes difficult to cope with. She inspires people to speak in support of their beliefs. Do not let your emotions take over your mind. take charge of life and express yourself.

It a poem that speaks about the fear within ourselves that traps us from expressing our emotions. P.O.W. explains that if we do not express the words that lie within us, we will be trapped in a self made prison of the mind.

people hold back words so they can hold back there feeling. A humans fear is knowing to much and not being able express it. Your emotions and feelings can be the prisoners of your mind if you let them become encaged.

The moral of the poem is to not doubt your self, to make a difference and to not be scared to speak your mind.

interpretation question: How can there be a prison of words unsaid?

Metaphor: And now I've made
My own hard bed
Inside a prison of words unsaid

A prisoner of age dying to be young: How is dying abiguous in this line?

P.O.W and Our Deepest Fear

comparison: Each poem describes the attidude of a person who holds back and doesn't speak their mind when needed.

difference: the individual in Our Deepest Fear is afraid to let go and go forth. Whereas, the individual in P.O.W doesn't speak her mind or express how she feels.

Why did Alicia Keys become a prisoner of words?

Why did she trap herself every time she stays quiet?

Why does she stop and stay silent when she should start to speak?

What does she mean by P.O.W?

How are you a child of GOD?

Our mindsets are different, but we are still responsible for our actions

Why are the authors so afraid of speaking their minds?

Can you really be trapped in a "prison" since you're not expressing how you feel?

"And now I've made
My own hard bed
Inside a prison of words unsaid"
*This is an example of a metaphor.

This is a very passionate poem about someone who is afraid to express how they're feeling.
It's almost like a prison since they're are locked up and overwhelmed with several thoughts wanting to lash out.

Interpertive
• Thought is a bird whose cage words in that our vocabularies determine the range of ideas that we can express.
Our ideas are like birds you can let them lose or lock them up

Ambigous
I guess that's what I am
Scraping this cold earth
For a piece of myself
For peace in myself
• It has two meanings searching or clearing up the earth for the reason to find ourself, to put us at ease
A prisoner of age dying to be young
trying to lock yourself to stay young

Why are the author's keeping everything so bottled in?

Why are they afraid to express their true feelings?

Alicia Keyes is a prisoner of her own mind, who doesn't know how to express her true feelings.

Marianne Williamson is saying that she wants us to be all that we can be.We can be anything we want if we don't hold back.

Evaluation:
Both these poems are about being confident about yourself.Alicia Keys talks about being a prisoner of words that she can not speak. Shes afriad that people might not except her for what she is. Marain Willson is saying that we should not allow our fear to over shadow our true potential what we could really become. We shouldn't let our self doubts consume our shinning light inside us.
